POSITION GUIDE

Offensive Positions

  1. Quarterback: The quarterback is the leader of the offense and receives the snap, passing or handing off the ball. They are not allowed to run with the ball after the snap.
  2. Center: The center snaps the ball to the quarterback and can also run routes as a receiver.
  3. Wide receiver: The wide receiver runs designated routes to catch a pass and advance the ball downfield.
  4. Running back: The running back takes the handoff from the quarterback and runs with the ball, or can also catch a pass.
  5. Slot receiver: The slot receiver is a secondary receiver who lines up between the outside receiver and the offensive line. They typically run short and quick routes to catch a pass and gain yards after the catch.
  6. Tight end: The tight end is an eligible receiver who lines up on the offensive line and can run routes to catch a pass.

Defense positions:

  1. Defensive back: The defensive back covers the wide receivers, either man-to-man or zone.

  2. Rusher: The rusher attempts to prevent the quarterback from passing the ball and must be at least seven feet off the line of scrimmage at the snap to rush the passer.

  3. Linebacker: The linebacker lines up behind the rusher and is responsible for stopping the running back and covering the short middle of the field.

  4. Cornerback: The cornerback covers the outside receiver and tries to prevent them from catching a pass.

  5. Safety: The safety is the last line of defense and covers the deep part of the field, preventing long passes and helping to stop the running back
